Boston can rightly consider itself a world-class city; For example, it is ranked fifth in the world for high-tech startups, ahead of LA, Tokyo, Paris and Toronto. But this reputation is seriously undermined by the deplorable state of public transport in the city. This week, an MBTA Red Line train derailed, triggering an all-too-familiar scene of passengers crawling through windows, then crowding into shuttles to take them to the next station. Two days earlier, an escalator malfunction at Back Bay station sent nine people to area hospitals. In July, 25 people were injured when a Green Line tram crashed into another. We could go on and on. There have been 14 derailments since 2019, spanning the pandemic period when ridership fell to record levels. Meanwhile, the T Budgetary Control and Management Board ceased its activities in June. It will be replaced by a new oversight body, the MBTA Board of Directors, as soon as Governor Baker makes his appointments to the Board of Directors. While we wait – the trains get off the tracks – and the debt continues to mount. The MBTA has a huge operating budget deficit and a backlog of $ 10 billion in maintenance and repairs. The WCVB 5 investigation found that an automated billion dollar bill collection system is now “years” behind. And we are still “years” away from the NTSB-recommended positive train control system that would prevent fatal crashes like the 2008 Green Line crash. We urge Governor Baker to take immediate action on appointments to the board of directors. But we also know that the sad truth is that our criticism would have been as relevant five, 10 or 20 years ago as it is today. Generations of leaders have failed to reverse the scenario – and so we are here in 2021 to make the same plea – still waiting for the same train that never arrives.
